I mentioned last week that I’m reading the Old Testament. I’m now in Numbers, but behind on posting so today I’m sharing from Exodus.
In the story of the Passover from Exodus 12, the Israelites were given instructions from God through Moses and Aaron. Following the instructions for eating the Passover, they were also instructed what to wear. Exodus 12:11 says ‘eat with your cloak tucked into your belt, your sandals on your feet and your staff in your hand’.
It’s so easy to breeze by that verse and not think much of it, but to me it demonstrates faith. They were preparing themselves for the day that God would lead them out of Egypt.
Preparing ourselves for the fulfillment of God’s promises, however unlikely they may seem, demonstrates our faith.
This is the same faith Abraham had in Hebrews 11:8 – By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.
Do you feel like Abraham? You are obeying the Lord and following him, but you don’t know where you are going. Or what about the Israelites, who were dressed and ready to go, but had to wait before leaving for the promised land. We can trust that when we pray according to God’s word, He will answer. But, there is always a time of waiting that comes before the answer.
What does your waiting look like? Are you waiting actively like the Israelites did? They were dressed and ready to go.
For us, while waiting for our babies, we are getting the house ready; cleaning out the nursery, making room in the garage for strollers, getting rid of unnecessary stuff to make room for baby stuff, saving money, discussing baby names, saving up vacation days at work, etc, etc.
What can you do while you are waiting on a promise of God? If it’s a husband, maybe you can spend time studying God’s word, get rid of your debt, and start saving for wedding and living expenses. The list goes on and on.
What path are you on? What are you waiting for? Wait actively. Wait with faith.
