What is Your Theology Based On?

What is Your Theology Based On?

Most people will agree that it is in life’s toughest and hardest seasons that an understanding of what one believes comes true. In other words, when faced with a trial, like infertility or a cancer diagnosis, is when people are really faced with the question of “what do you believe?” or “do you believe anything at all?”

I have spent a large part of the last 12 years in very difficult seasons and based on those trials I have come to the conclusion of just what it is that I believe. Today seemed like the right time to share what my theology is based on and after I share about my theology, I want to share what might be problematic with yours.

My theology? It’s based on the Bible. Every Word in the Bible is what I believe. I don’t just pick and choose the verses that give me warm-fuzzies. I believe every single word, knowing that it’s God-breathed, alive and active!

“Every Scripture has been written by the Holy Spirit, the breath of God. It will empower you by its instruction and correction, giving you the strength to take the right direction and lead you deeper into the path of godliness. Then you will be God’s servant, fully mature and perfectly prepared to fulfill any assignment God gives you.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17

“For the word of God is alive and active.” Hebrews 4:12

Now that you know what my theology is based on, do you want to hear what might be the problem with your theology? Well it might depend on what your theology is, but it’s become very apparent that a lot of Christians actually base their theology on what did or didn’t happen in their past. Let me give you an example… “I prayed for my sister to get healed from cancer and she passed away.” And before one might realize, their whole theology is based on that one circumstance. Or maybe it’s… “I was abandoned as a child” and so that person builds a whole theology around having a distant God who leaves them and abandons them. A few more example of this might be, “I will only believe God is good if he gives me a baby.” Or maybe that it’s that you love conjunctions and prepositions. “God is good, but…..” or “If this, then that….” Andrew Wommack sums this kind of scenario up perfectly, “People won’t let God’s Word get in the way of what they believe.”

The reality is that if we were to list every circumstance or event that people base their theology on, then it could be miles long. And there is a major, major problem with that! The major danger is that focusing on what didn’t happen then changes what truth actually is to you and instead of your theology being based on the Bible, it’s based on your circumstances. Or perhaps it’s 80% on the Bible and 20% of your circumstances or whatever % you want to make it.

The other situation I want to point out might be those Christians who base their theology on 2 verses from scripture that are taken completely out of context. If that’s you, then you will know exactly which two verses those are and this too, creates a major problem.

Can I encourage you to take time to do a heart and mind check about what you believe? Do you actually believe the Word of God? Do you believe that God is good or is it a circumstantial belief? I don’t know about you, but I will not base my beliefs on anything except the Word of God! I have faced a lot of hard things in my life. There has been death and sickness. There are a lot of things that have happened, and are currently happening, that have not made sense. But I will absolutely not let my circumstances or past experiences dictate what I believe. What I believe is exactly what the Word of God says and nothing else can or ever will alter that.

Let me proclaim that it’s time to stop creating a theology based on circumstances, experiences, relationships, situations or verses that have been taken out of context. It’s time to believe that you have a good Father in Heaven who desires for you to build your theology on his Word and nothing other than that.
