The Only Opinion That Matters

Opinions. Everyone has them. If I am real honest with you, I don’t always want to hear them. Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s so important to seek wise counsel and to talk through issues and decisions with those who will offer wise advice. So important. However, I think seeking counsel is much different than receiving opinions.

Here is the deal. Everyone has an opinion. Doctors. Spouses. Family members. Friends. Co-workers. Google. And I’m sure we can all relate that yes, even strangers can have strong opinions. It’s easy to get caught up in them, am I right? I think it’s hard when those who offer their unwanted or unsolicited opinions are those who are closest to you. Because in the end when someone is going through a trial it’s usually not people’s opinions that they want, but instead they just want a listening ear.

It’s so easy to get caught up in it all. Well “so and so” thinks this and “so and so” said this. But at the end of the day there is only one opinion that truly matters and that is the opinion of Jesus. Now again, hear me out, it’s important to receive wise counsel from other believers, but beyond that, guess what, the word of Jesus trumps every other opinion.

We have received a lot of push back for our decisions to not pursue IVF or adoption. A lot. If we asked each person who we know what should be our next steps we would get a different answer from them all. Doctors say babies will never happen. Family says to do IVF. Friends tell us to wait. Strangers tell us to take a vacation. But guess what? Guess whose opinion matters the most? God’s. Ultimately if we want to do what brings glory to God then he is the only person who we should be listening to. And I say “we” because yes, I believe it’s a decision between my husband, myself and God.

What big decisions are you facing? Who are you listening to today? Are you putting your trust in the advice from those around you? Whatever you do, make sure your first priority is to listen to and please God, not man. You can’t please both, so who is it going to be?
