Romans 4:24 Credited as Righteousness #183

Romans is my very favorite book of the Bible. Well, at least it has been over the last year or so. I just can’t get enough of it. It doesn’t matter how many times I read it, it just speaks to me with a fresh revelation every time.

Romans 4:22-24 says, “So now you can see why Abraham’s faith was credited to his account as righteousness before God. And this declaration was not just spoken over Abraham, but also over us. For when we believe and embrace the one who brought our Lord Jesus back to life, perfect righteousness will be credited to our account.”

These verses are referring back to Genesis 15, when the Lord made a covenant with Abraham. Genesis 15:6 says, “Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.”  But just as it says in Romans 4, this declaration wasn’t just for Abraham, it was for you and me too.

I love that the message translation says “Abraham was declared fit before God by trusting God to set him right. The same thing gets said about us when we embrace and believe the One who brought Jesus to life when the conditions were equally hopeless.”

When Abraham trusted God, he was set right. And that same promise holds true for you today. When you embrace and believe God, even when the conditions around you look hopeless, Jesus sets you right with God.

The beautiful thing about getting right with God is it is not something you have to work for or earn. Your righteousness is completely based on the sacrifice Jesus made on the cross. It’s through the blood of Jesus. Abraham had to look to the night sky wondering about his future and his descendants, but you? You get to look to Jesus!

God has made it so simple. Believe in him and embrace him and you will be made right. He suffered the shame. He paid the penalty. He bore the torture. He endured it all. And because of what he did on the cross? You are loved. You are accepted. You are forgiven. You are set free. You are made right! God is the one who credits you. So do you believe that Jesus is the very one who brought you life?
