Romans 12 packs a powerful punch. Verses 9-21 remind us how to have transformed relationships including being devoted to others, speaking blessings over others, and living in harmony. Romans 12:15 states, “Rejoice with those who rejoice, and mourn with those who mourn.”
This world would look much different if we loved others by showing more compassion instead of growing bitter, jealous, and angry. What if just as verse 16 says, we were “mindful of others?” Don’t you think we would all be better off if we took a spiritual stance as the Lord has called us to do and celebrated with those who are in a position to be celebrated and grieved with those that are mourning?
I get asked all the time, “how can you be around baby stuff all the time?” Or, “why do you invest your time and heart following sad stories?” I don’t know if I would say this verse is the reason why, but this verse sure does help explain it. If I am celebrating, I want others to celebrate with me. If I am weeping, I want others to weep with me. Isn’t that what a true community of believers should do? Stand together as one? If I want that for myself, shouldn’t I do the same for others?
How do you want others to react when you are rejoicing or mourning? Maybe you should act the same way you would want others to act towards you! Help your brother or sister in Christ out by living in harmony with whatever they are facing. Cheer them on when they are celebrating and cry with them when they are hurting. Don’t treat others as they deserve, but love them according to how God originally intended.
