Psalm 37:4 Delight in the Lord #174

Psalm 37:4 Delight in the Lord #174

Over a year ago I shared Psalm 37:3 and today I wanted to share Psalm 37:4 which says, “Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” In this verse, David gives the command to “take delight in the Lord.” When I looked up what the word delight meant, it was defined as “please greatly, great pleasure, happiness, joy.” So, David is telling us to take “great pleasure in the Lord.”

If you have a spouse or a child, how would you take great pleasure in them? Not only would you need to be in their presence, but you would need to get to know them. Well God is the same way. To take delight in him, you have to know him. The more you know him and who he is, the more you will be filled with his pleasure, happiness and joy.

I love the Passion Translation of Psalm 37:4, “Make God the utmost delight and pleasure of your life, and he will provide for you what you desire most.” What happens when you delight yourself in the Lord? “He gives you the desires of your heart.” As you delight yourself in God, spend time with him and get to know him, naturally your desires will line up with what he has and wants for you. The point of this passage isn’t saying if you delight in God, you will get that brand new fancy car or win the lottery. No, it’s that God will give you the desires of your heart that line up with his will for you.

There is a reason that this verse starts with delighting yourself in the Lord and him fulfilling your desires next. It’s almost like David sets it as a prerequisite or makes an “if, then” statement. As you delight yourself in him, then the Lord will give you the desires of your heart. Make sure that your focus is not on what you get, but your focus is on pursuing Christ by spending time in his presence, spending time getting to know him and pursuing him for who he is. When you have delighted in God, you can trust your desires are from him and that he will always fulfill them!
