What comes to mind when you hear the word fruitful? Because of our journey, the first thing I always think of is having children. John 15:8, NLT paints a much bigger picture and reminds me that bearing fruit, or the opposite, being barren, doesn’t have to do with just having children. This verse says, “When you produce much fruit, you are my true disciples. This brings great glory to my Father.”
As a follower of Jesus and disciple of God’s, his desire for you is to bear fruit no matter what stage of life you are in. John 15:4 says, “Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me.” You produce fruit when you remain in Christ. Fruitfulness will look different for each person and season, but anyone that connects to the source of Christ — the fruit-maker — will produce fruit. The more connected you are, the more fruit that you will see come forth.
No matter what barrenness you have been experiencing, whether it’s physically like me, or something much different, you can still produce fruit. Don’t think because one area of your life is dry, the rest can’t be flourishing. There is a bigger picture than what you can see, and just because life isn’t progressing forward where you want it to, doesn’t mean the other areas are to be stagnant as well. Personally, the one thing I want is to be fruitful physically and while that hasn’t happened yet, God has opened up doors with the Moms in the Making ministry and this blog to produce fruit in other ways. No, it’s not how I wanted, but yes, it is what he intended.
So how do you produce fruit? Make sure you are connected to the vine. Pursue God and his Word, and even if you don’t see the fruit manifest in the one area of life you want the most, allow him to work though you in other areas that you might not have thought were possible. Expect God to water every barren area of your life and before you know it, fruit will come forth at the perfect time!
