Yesterday kicked off National Infertility Awareness Week, which as stated in the name is obviously a week to bring awareness to infertility. The theme for this year is “Flip the Script.” The purpose of the theme this year is to change the conversation around infertility and today, I want to do just that!
Let’s be honest, there isn’t a lot of positivity found in the infertility community. There isn’t a lot of hope, joy or peace found either.
I have been a part of this community for 6 years and what I see is women who are hurting. What I see is women who are desperate. What I see is women who are heartbroken. What I see is women who are negative. What I see is women who are trying to write their own story. What I see is women who have made infertility their identity and motherhood their idol.
And it reminds me exactly why I do what I do all day long. These women are exactly why I spend my days investing in sharing truth via this blog, my book and the faith-based fertility support group I founded, Moms in the Making.
I don’t want to overlook the reality: infertility is hard and a lot of heartbreak comes with it. Grieving is healthy and important and I’m not diminishing those facts at all. I have been waiting for 6 years and I’m well aware of how hard it is. It’s so hard that I wrote about it here.
But, I want to Flip the Script and share this with you and talk about something different and no, it’s not statistics or doctors or insurance or legislature. This is what I want to share with you today:
Flip the Script
Infertility is not who you are. It’s not who or what your identity is either. Infertility doesn’t have to rule you. It doesn’t have to ruin you. It doesn’t have to consume you. It doesn’t have to be all you think about or all you talk about or all you care about. It doesn’t have to be all you spend your money on. It doesn’t have to ruin your marriage. It doesn’t have to end all your friendships. It doesn’t have to leave you hopeless.
Instead, your identity should be found in Christ. Instead, you can find love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness and faithfulness. Your marriage can thrive. Your finances can thrive. Your friendships can thrive. You can have abundant life and you don’t even have to wait until there is a baby in your arms; you can access it now! And when you grieve? You can grieve with hope!
So this year? I’m excited to Flip the Script. I am excited to point women to Christ in the wait. I’m excited to share that putting your trust and hope in Christ is the only thing that will get you through. I’m excited to join you in declaring that God has the final say, not the doctors or anyone else. I’m excited to speak over you that you are fertile and fruitful. I’m excited to remind you that God makes the barren woman a joyful mother of children. And I’m excited to remind you that you are adopted into the Kingdom and the only thing that can and should define you is what God says about you!
This might not be what you expected to read about Infertility Awareness Week, but I’ll be honest, sharing the truth is what matters most to me. It matters way more than all the statistics or politics around the topic. If you are someone who is going through infertility, I hope you access all the joy and peace that can be found in Christ and make the choice to thrive through your current season. I also hope you join our Moms in the Making Group on facebook and the 2nd annual Moms in the Making conference. Details for both can be found here.
