This past Sunday I competed in my 5th tri. I had never said this before and any other time would have been so bummed, but I was hoping the race would be canceled. I hadn’t swam or biked much and with being gone in Colorado, the race was the last thing on my mind. The good news for me (or so I thought) was we were forecasted to have a lot of rain and storms starting the morning of the race.
So I packed my bags and assumed when we got there that they would definitely cancel the swim portion and make it a duathlon or a 5k, but nope, neither of those were the case. They did decide to cancel the Olympic distance and make it all a sprint. When we started the swim it was just a light mist, so no big deal, but by the time I was on the bike it was a downpour. I am talking I was riding with half an eye open because it was so hard to see and it hurt to have my eyes open. Going into the wind with the rain against my skin it felt like pellets. I knew that once I got off the bike the run would be canceled, but nope, that didn’t happen either.
I didn’t even bother putting on my running shoes. I have an injury that actually increases in pain when I have my shoes on so that combined with the thought of my completely soaked shoes I knew would be waiting for me helped me to decide to skip them all together and run barefoot (with socks).
Overall I was only two minutes slower than this same race last year and considering the conditions I was happy with that. The bike was definitely the hardest and my time showed for it. I came in 3rd place in my age group, but didn’t stay for any awards. We pretty much immediately jetted out of there when the race was over because of the rain (and should I mention lightning and thunder too).
The pictures we got weren’t great and there aren’t too many because Colby was hiding in the car (props to him for getting out of the car at all) and I wasn’t willing to pay $25 an image for the ones they took. I should be thankful for all of the good weather I have had on my other triathlons, because now I know how miserable it is racing in the rain! Although I will say, I have never had such a detailed post about a race, so there was definitely some overall added excitement to this triathlon.
If you want to see other races I have done you can see them below (only sharing half-marathons, triathlons, and Head for the Cure races)
