A few weeks ago I shared a post about feeling like I am in a pit. Today I wanted to share more from one of the verses mentioned in that post – Psalm 40:1-2.
David starts this Psalm off by saying he waited patiently for the Lord and the Lord heard him. I don’t know how long David waited, but I imagine it was a long time. The fact that He had to wait patiently means he probably didn’t get what he wanted overnight. No matter how long he waited, he did not wait in vain. The Lord was with Him.
Verse 2 says David was lifted out of the pit, his feet were set on a rock, and he had a firm place to stand. That is what the Lord does when we wait on Him and wait patiently – He lifts us out of the pit.
David expected that what he was waiting for would come in due time and so he continued to wait patiently. Just like David the blessing we are waiting for often can’t be received until we go through the trial of waiting. But, after we are standing on the solid rock we can celebrate. Verse 3 says that God put a new song in his mouth. Not only did God lift him from the pit and give him firm ground, but He gave David a new joy as well.
The reality is this verse doesn’t just apply to David, but applies to every single one of us too. If you aren’t already at some point you will be in a trial or a place of waiting. But, the hope is when you put your trust in Him and wait patiently, just like David, the Lord will restore you to solid ground and put a new song in your heart!
