In John 13, Jesus had an important lesson to teach his disciples. The context of the chapter takes place one night before His death and although Jesus knew He would be betrayed and disowned by those who walked closest to Him, He still chose to love and serve them.
Peter was very confused in John 13:6-7, and after realizing what Jesus was doing he told Jesus not to wash his feet. In John 13:7, Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.” Because there is a lot of powerful content this chapter is hard to unpack in a blog post, but what I do want to share is this verse is still applicable to every one of us today.
The disciples didn’t know what Jesus was doing nor did they understand the purpose of their feet being cleansed. The spiritual, physical, and emotional meaning was much more important than the act itself. The same applies to what God is doing in you and through you today. While it might look like cleansing of feet, God is always doing a bigger work than what you can understand. His plans and ways are higher and there is much more going on in the Spiritual realm than your mind can comprehend.
You might not realize what the Lord is doing now, but at some point you will. He desires to partner up and work in, with, and through you. Know that you will never fully understand all of His ways, but whatever you do continue to trust that His ways are better than yours!
