How Our Impossible Situation Became the Greatest Gift
Looking back on our almost 13-year infertility journey, I’m in awe of how different our lives have turned out from what we once imagined or what they once were.
Infertility has been one of the most gut-wrenching, heartbreaking challenges I’ve ever faced, marked by countless moments of sorrow, grief, and overwhelming disappointment. But what I never expected—nor could I have predicted—is that this painful journey would ultimately lead to receiving the greatest gift.
No, infertility is not from Jesus. But when we seek Him in our challenges, He can take even the hardest, most hopeless situations—what the enemy intends to destroy us with—and use them for our good and His glory. And that’s exactly what happened with our diagnosis.
When we were diagnosed with infertility, the doctors couldn’t help us. To this day, there is no medication, treatment, diet, or procedure that can fix our situation. It is a completely hopeless and impossible situation.
Our impossibility led to my desperation. At my rock-bottom moment, when I was completely hopeless and saw no way forward, I was met with two choices: run to God or run away. By His grace, I chose to run to Him.
In that desperation, when I had nowhere else to turn, I found a relationship with God I never could have imagined. Had I gotten pregnant when I first wanted to, I would have missed the thousands of hours I spent with Him in the Word, in prayer, and in worship. I would have missed the opportunity to know the Father, encounter the Holy Spirit in such a profound way, and experience the greatest transformation of my life.
The person I am now is nothing like who I was back then—all because my impossibility led to my desperation, and my desperation led me to the greatest gift of all, straight to the feet of Jesus. In Him, I found hope, peace, joy, and comfort that no situation, diagnosis, or waiting could ever take away. His presence became my peace, His love my joy, His hope my strength.
To those of you reading this and struggling through your own desperate season—please hear me: The greatest gift you’ll find is not a baby (or a house, spouse, or whatever it is that feels impossible to overcome right now), no matter how much you long for it. The greatest gift is Jesus. It is His presence that brings peace, joy, and hope. And no matter how impossible your situation feels right now, He is there with you, ready to meet you in your deepest place of need.
I promise you, if you bring your impossible situation and desperate moments to Jesus—and make Him your ultimate pursuit—He will become the greatest gift, far beyond anything you could have asked or imagined. Your life might not look like what you wanted or dreamed, but if you have Him, you truly have the greatest gift of all.
