Head for the Cure

Head for the Cure

May is Brain Tumor Awareness Month. Grey is the color for brain cancer, so May is the month that we ‘Go Grey‘ for awareness. Last year I shared a lot of details and facts about brain cancer, also admitting that the only reason I knew May was significant for brain cancer was because of Kai’s story.

Going Grey in May for Brain Tumor Awareness Month

We have been so thankful for the Head for the Cure organization whose mission is to raise awareness and funding to inspire hope for the community of brain cancer patients, their families, friends, caregivers and other supporters, while celebrating their courage, spirit and energy.

HFTC has 5K races in 16 different cities. In 2014, these races and the organization raised $1.6 million with 15,000 runners/walkers participating in the races. Team Kai participated in 5 of those including North Texas, Central Texas, Houston, Tulsa, and Chicago.

Central Texas Head for the Cure

Earlier in March, Colby and I headed down to Austin for the Central Texas race. Since Austin is where Kai is from, there is always a big turnout. We are so thankful so many people who donate money or sacrifice their morning to come race to remember Kai as well as bring awareness and raise funds.

I decided to see how fast I could run for Kai and PR’ed at 25:37 getting 1st place in my division. There aren’t many reasons to ever try and run that fast, except for my nephew. We miss him more than words can say, but thankful for days like these where we get to run in his memory.

North Texas Head for the Cure

The day we left for Costa Rica, we participated in the North Texas 5K. I had several friends come out for the race, my parents were there, and my brother and SIL came up from Austin to participate as well. $124K was raised from this event and there was a great turnout despite the humid/rainy weather!

Please share Kai’s story and help educate others on the facts of brain tumors. Today when you read this 40 people will pass away from brain cancer. By raising funds and awareness the hope is to bring this number down to 0!  If you have any interest in participating in a future race, you can check out details here.
