Divine Health

A recent sermon by Robert Morris spoke to me for several reasons. Not only did he address the topic of healing which I have learned so much about over the past year, but he also recognized those women who have lost children and those who are desiring children, but haven’t yet conceived. I respect that Robert shared about his daughters miscarriage as well as acknowledged those who have lost. I believe that anyone who is currently experiencing infertility would find this sermon encouraging to listen to.

I have posted about Psalm 103 before, but want to share the first 3 verses again, Bless the Lord, O my soul, And all that is within me, bless His holy name. Bless the Lord, O my soul, And forget not all His benefits; Who pardons all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases. The first benefit mentioned in Psalm 103 is forgiveness. The second benefit mentioned is health. We know that salvation and health are given the same way – God’s grace given through faith. Verse after verse in the Bible it tells us we can receive healing and forgiveness, so based on Psalm 103 how can we address the topic of illness?

1. Why are people sick?  Jesus bore our penalty, power, and presence of sin and sickness on the cross. When He did this we were saved from the penalty of sin, we are still being saved from the power of sin, but it’s not until we are in heaven that we are saved from the presence of sin. Because of the evil in this world, sin is still present, and since it is present we are all still affected by it, whether it’s our own sin or the repercussions of others sin.  Sickness is the same way. Jesus bore our sicknesses. But, because sickness is still present, sometimes we fall under power of sickness. A lie that so many people believe is that sickness is a punishment from God. God will never punish you for your sins, he already punished Jesus. Sickness and sin are present because of the fall of man and the presence of evil.

2. How are people healed?  People are healed the same way they are forgiven – by God’s grace through faith. Healing is a gift from God just as forgiveness is. For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. Ephesians 2:8-9

3. What if?  So what if I am not healed? What happens then? I struggled with this question after Kai passed away. But, at the end of the day, I’m not going to let the times that I or others don’t get healed stop me from believing that God heals. God is healer. That is not only what He does, but it is who He is. I believe God will, I believe God can, but even if He doesn’t I still believe in God. It’s the same way with our fertility. I believe God can heal us and make us parents, I believe He will heal us and make us parents, but even if He doesn’t make us parents, I still believe! I trust Him even if I don’t get what I want.

Trust God not only with your salvation, but your healing too. Trust Him with your life for how your story will glorify Him, even if it’s not how you would have written your story. Pursue Him more than you pursue the healing and know that no matter what happens Christ will be magnified in your body whether by life or death. For I fully expect and I hope that I will never be ashamed, but that I will continue to be for Christ, as I have been in the past. And I trust that my life will bring honor to Christ, whether I live or die. Philippians 1:20
