I never thought I would need to share and bring awareness to so many different causes. A few weeks ago I shared that it was National Infertility Awareness Week and today I am sharing about another topic near and dear to me, Brain Tumor Awareness Month.
So why do I care? Why is important for me to ‘go grey’ this month? I do this to honor my nephew, who we lost in March 2014. I do this to share the honest and raw truth about it all. I do this to bring awareness to the reality of what so many families go through. I do this in hopes someone will be willing to make a donation and eventually enough funds will be raised so that a cure could be found.
Do you know there are over 120 different types of brain tumors, with only 4 of those that have treatments approved by the FDA? Each year 70,000 people will be diagnosed with a brain tumor and each year 15,000 people will die from a brain tumor. Brain Tumors are the 2nd leading cause of death in children (behind leukemia). A large classroom (40 people) full of people die every day from a brain tumor. Unfortunately, I don’t have the statistics around the trauma that people go through. I don’t have the facts on the emotional heartache or how many hospital days patients stay the night or how many chemo or radiation treatments they receive. The list of what any given patient might go through when being diagnosed really is endless.
Head for the Cure
This leads into my next topic of discussion, which is about Head for the Cure, an organization whose mission is to raise awareness and funding. This past Saturday, Colby as well as some family members (even my aunt and uncle all the way from the Netherlands joined) and friends participated in the North Texas 5K. This was our 3rd year to attend the event and if I am counting correctly our 7th Head for the Cure race to participate in. There were 2,150 runners and $158K was raised from this event. I ran as fast as I could, thinking of Kai the whole time, and managed to place 2nd in my age group. My dad also rocked the race and placed 2nd in his age group as well.
PS. Today is the last day to enter to win a tumbler from Marquia Makes, a tank from Pure Grace and this devotional book about infertility that I was able to contribute to. Enter over on instagram to win.
