This past Saturday Colby and I ran our first half marathon together, the Texas Big Star Half. This was Colby’s first and my 6th half marathon. We were supposed to run one together a few years ago, but it got canceled because of the weather and let’s just say Colby wasn’t too disappointed. I know I said this was his first, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was also his last.
Hands down this was one of the best races I have ever participated in for so many reasons. I have never seen so many volunteers for packet pickup and they were all so helpful. I’ve also never received so many goodies in my swag bag. There were more water stations along the course than I have ever seen before. The after-party was a legit party. And the medal was top notch (yes that matters). Compared to the last race I did, this was a huge improvement and we were both pleasantly surprised.
The race started at 7 am, which was probably best considering how hot it was outside. I only had to stop to go to the bathroom one time so that’s a success! Colby and I stuck together the whole race, even though he was rocking it and could have gone much faster than me.
By about mile 6 my body was hurting. Oh the pain in my legs. Part of that is probably because I haven’t changed running shoes in years and the other part is just because we didn’t properly train. By mile 9 or so, I had to do some speed walking intervals because it got to the point where I felt like my legs were giving out on me. Colby of course felt fine and was so patient with me. He never has anything to complain about and he is such a trooper.
In some ways, it went by super fast, but wow was I ready to be done by mile 10. It’s never a good feeling knowing that once you hit that point, you still have a 5K. We finished with the exact same time 2:23:54 which was a PR for me, and I guess Colby too, since it was his first race. Yes, I realize how slow that is, but when it comes to long distances, I go as slow as possible. I actually just realized I was exactly the 50th percentile in my age group, so that is much better than I would have thought.
The after party was again the biggest party I had ever seen after a race, including a full 10-ish member band, a ton of tents, a Slurpee truck, lots of free food and drinks, a massage tables and more. We didn’t stick around too long, but got some goodies before heading back home.
As usual after a race, I felt awful. I think my first words after crossing were “I am never doing that again.” Don’t worry, I have a triathlon this weekend. Ha.
Colby’s parents were in town for the weekend so that afternoon we headed out to a winery and then dinner. Despite the Texas wind, I managed to wear my new dress from Shop Simply Bliss Boutique. Head on over to their website to see all their great deals they have going on, including LipSense, which I recently just started wearing. I am a lipstick girl and just love it. It really does stay on ALL day. Anyway, use code Induetime for 15% off your order on their site.
30,000 steps in one day? That’s a wrap!
I was provided complimentary race entry as compensation for this blog post. As always, all opinions are my own and I have given honest feedback on the race and course.
