John 15:13 No Greater Love #175

When I reflect of our journey on waiting for babies, I think about the community that we have been surrounded by. So many have sacrificed so much to stand with us, including all those who have spent time in prayer and have gone out of their way to love on us. Which brings me to John 15:12-13, “This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

God gives the command of love each other as he has loved us, and yes that includes everyone. And then he tells us to “lay down” our life for one another. So what might that look like? It’s making sacrifices by listening, helping, encouraging and giving. It’s choosing to put others before yourself. It’s choosing to understand even when things might not make sense. A friend who lays down their life chooses to say, “I am going to put your needs before mine.”

When you reflect on your friendships are you this kind of friend? Have you chosen to lay down your wishes, your desires, your needs to put the needs of your friend before your own? If not, what is stopping you? When you are in Christ and follow his commission to bear his fruit then you will choose to love others with the same love he has given you by laying your life down for those around you.

Who can you lay down your life for today? Even though the statement “lay down your life” might come across as something very extreme and daunting, it doesn’t have to be, as even the smallest sacrifice can show the love of Christ. And it doesn’t just apply to those you know, but what about that stranger who could use a hand? Or your co-worker who has always treated you poorly? Whoever it is, choose to use the same love God has given you to love others.
