The Dangers of Open Doors

The Dangers of Open Doors

The Dangers of Open Doors

Last month Colby and I had some work done to the outside of our house. There were several men working on the project and they had to leave four doors open that go from our house to the outside so they could do some painting. Well a few hours into them working I had to leave the house to go meet a friend for lunch. As I was leaving I realized how uncomfortable it was that I essentially was leaving my house completely unlocked. Open doors for anyone to gain access to our house. All of our belongings. All of our valuables. All of it, just left with anyone to access.

And in that moment the Lord reminded me how often I have left (and still do leave) doors open to the enemy. The enemy is always ready to steal, kill and destroy. He works like a roaring lion ready to attack at any time. Which is why we as believers have to take a stance and make it a priority to make sure that we never leave anything open to him.

There are several ways the enemy can come in, but one of the ways is by invitation. And invitation is exactly what I did that day when I left my doors open. I invited anyone in who wanted to come in, right? Well when we are acting and speaking the things of Christ, then we leave no room for the enemy to reside or in other terms, we keep our doors locked. But when we do things against Christ and his word, we invite the enemy to come in and invade our lives. What are some things that will invite the enemy in? Disobedience, anger, rebellion, unforgiveness, false religion, occult involvement, generational curses and word curses are all things that will leave a door open to the enemy.

What happens when we have open doors? The enemy attacks. Just like if you leave a door to your house open, someone will come in to attack, the enemy does the same thing. There are several symptoms that you might recognize as an attack but any physical, mental or spiritual abnormalities probably line up with a demonic attack. Some symptoms might be unexplained illnesses, self-deception, torments, being accident prone, addictive behaviors, reproductive problems, breakdowns, anxiety, confusion, depression, fear, etc. This list, much like the list above with what can cause an open door, can go on and on.

When I left my house that day, with the doors unlocked and opened, it was intentional, but you know what has happened in the past? Colby and I have also unintentionally left our doors unlocked or even at times, our garage opened. Let me tell you, it’s never a good feeling. Has this ever happened to you? Some of the open doors in your life are probably more obvious, for example if you practiced cult-like behavior in a fraternity, and some open doors might be things that you are not aware of, but either way, it’s important to reognize how dangerous and harmful open doors are and then to take every action necessary to get them closed!

So, if you are human, then you probably have several open doors, which is why it is important to do some spiritual house cleaning. The good news is that we know the great restorer, forgiver and healer, Jesus Christ. So the first step is to ask him to be your Father. And next, is to recognize that there are several things in your life that have caused open doors. So, now that you recognize that, are you willing to decide that now is time to shut them?

If so, you can start by confessing and repenting from all sin. Next, it’s time to take authority over your actions, words and anything that you have done or said that doesn’t line up with the things of Christ. I have modeled this in an example prayer below, however I encourage you to verbalize the very open doors that were intentional and that Holy Spirit brings to mind first.

Lord,

Thank you for teaching me about the importance of closing all doors. I come to you with the desire to do some spiritual house cleaning. I ask that any areas of open doors would be revealed to me. Show me every open door that needs to be shut. I ask for forgiveness and freedom from my past and that anything that is not from your blood would be removed from me right now. I break and loose  myself from any evil influence and power that is trying to rule over me. I renounce and rebuke every curse that has come upon me, whether done intentionally or unintentionally. I command every manifestation that the enemy has brought about in my life to be wiped clean by your blood. I declare that I am overcome by the blood of the Lamb and ask you to remove me from any bondage that I am currently living in and instead move me to a life of freedom. I thank you Lord that you came to bring freedom to the captives, which includes me. Thank you Jesus that you give me a Spirit of love, power and a sound mind. Thank you for refreshing my mind, soul and body and healing me from anything that was in my past. I command all attacks from the enemy to flee in the name of Jesus and declare that every door in my life that is now open would be completely shut and locked. Amen

*I need to finish by saying that this is a topic that is very hard to cover with just one blog post. In addition, my knowledge on this topic is limited. Although the following information is meant to be valuable, I encourage you to surround yourself with believers who can continue to keep you accountable as well as better explain the process of seeking freedom and healing from open doors.

Dig Deeper with these scriptures: Genesis 4:7, Deuteronomy 28:15-26; Galatians 3:13-14, Galatians 5:16, Ephesians 4:27, 1 Peter 5:8

Such a good reminder to stay alert! It’s so easy to get a little lazy or to not even realize doors are open.

I am so glad you referenced 1 Peter 5:8. As I read your post, it’s all I could think of. After reading your post, I looked the verse up since it was on my mind. I just love the way the passion translation quotes 1 Peter 5:8… “Be well balanced and always alert, because your enemy, the devil, roams around incessantly, like a roaring lion looking for its prey to devour.”

The word picture of the enemy roaming around incessantly, mixed with you warning that it is so easy to miss open doors… reminds my heart that to stand alert always.

Thank you for sharing your heart, even when it’s a hot topic! It’s so on point!

Hey Caroline thanks for sharing this and even a prayer for people like me who just don’t know what to say sometimes. This has opened a door (ha, and we are closing them) for me to explore generational curses, your post today was the FIRST TIME I’ve ever heard it. You always bring something new from God to my life. I can see some generational curses at work within my family. If you have other resources or scriptures about battling generational curses, would you email me or share a few other scriptures for me to read upon?

I’ve come up against blatant spiritual attacks before in another culture. It’s so very dangerous and real, but in our culture it’s easy to get complacent and forget that we really are in a battlefield and that there is so much more going on in this world than what is visibly seen. I’m so thankful that, though we definitely need to stay alert and keep our hearts in check, Jesus is greater. We have no need to fear when we cling to Him! Thanks for the reminder to stay diligent and reinforce any weak areas!

Well I loved this analogy of spiritual house cleaning (maybe b/c I’m a neat freak, ha!). Guess I should pray and take an inventory of what needs decluttering … something tells me it’ll have to do with less social media.
