Blessings of God
My dear friend gave me a book a long time ago, and I’ve read through it a few times, but as I was on the plane to Phoenix last week for work, I decided to make notes so I wouldn’t forget all the wonderful content. The book, Breakthrough Prayer, is written by Jim Cymbala, who is a pastor at the Brooklyn Tabernacle.. The book explains the principles of life changing prayer. The first chapter is over the blessing of God and how we go about unlocking the blessings He has for us.
“And the Lord your God will bless you in everything you do.” Deuteronomy 15:18
Regardless of the battles we face, nothing can overcome the blessings God has for us. Our current trial of infertility and long distance is all part of God’s ultimate plan to bless us. So while we are waiting, what are practical things we can do to seek and receive God’s blessing?
1- Ask in Prayer. In the two verses below, Jesus cried out to God. If He did it, shouldn’t we? God wants us to talk to Him. He wants us to ask boldly for BIG things. Jim hadn’t mentioned it in the book, but one of my favorite verses is the 1 John 5:14-15 verse below. It’s so comforting to me that God hears us when we ask! He is so good to us!
And the Lord said, “Listen to what the unjust judge says. And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? Luke 18:6-7
During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Hebrews 5:7.
This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him. 1 John 5:14-15
2- Read God’s word. When we read His word with a sincerity of knowing Him more, He will bless us. For me it’s similar to working out and eating. When I am working out, I eat healthier and when I eat healthy I want to work out. Reading God’s word directly coincides with our actions, words and our relationship with God. When we read His word, we grow closer to Him and the closer we grow to Him, the more we want to read His word.
Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it, because the time is near. Revelations 1:3
3- Obedience through faith. God blesses those who walk in His light and holiness. Wouldn’t it be hard for God to bless us when we are living with sin? Because God loves us, He wants us to trust Him by giving Him the reigns of our lives. We shouldn’t continue to make our own decisions and be selfish with our lives and actions while at the same time expect that God will bless us. He desires and longs for us to obey Him by faith.
Surely, Lord, you bless the righteous; you surround them with your favor as with a shield.Psalm 5:12
4- Give compassionately. God wants us to have a “me last” attitude. He wants us to seek His blessings diligently and be aware that all things, money or possessions are from Him. He wants us to give, not only financially, but to serve others with a Christ like attitude too.
In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ” Acts 20:35
And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. Hebrews 11:6
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. 1 John 1:7
